Smartphone Battery Performance Score and Battery Performance Results

Smartphone Battery Performance Overall Score: 40/100

With the Nokia G20 launched nearly over a year ago, the Nokia G21 makes its arrival within the Entry Tier (€0-€199) of budget smartphones.

This smartphone faces tough competition within this Entry Tier, especially from better well-known brands such as Xiaomi, Realme and Motorola. However, the Nokia G21 uses Android One, which could be seen as advantageous for users with easy UI and fast updates.

As with the Nokia G10, which we tested in our labs earlier this year, the Nokia G21 has exactly the same battery capacity of 5050 mAh. Despite having the same battery capacity, the Nokia G21 achieved an overall battery of 40 out of a possible 100 and was unable to match its processor obtaining 50 as an overall score.

Welcome to the Entry Tier Ranking Table

Within the Entry Tier Ranking table, (smartphones classified in a price range from €0-€199) the Nokia G21 joins other budget smartphones that have gained some impressive scores when tested by our experts in the SmartViser team for battery performance.

The main challengers, to the Nokia G21, are the Oppo A16 and Ulefone Note 11 Pro, both obtaining a score of 39 out of 100 when reviewed in our labs during 2021.

All results can be seen in the table below.

From our battery performance testing, we have compiled all our testing results and scores during 2021 - 2022. These can be seen here in our Smartphone Ranking 2021/2022 table.

Let’s have a look at the Nokia G21 Battery Performance Testing Results in more detail.

Overall Battery Performance Results

With an average price, of around 189.99 EURO the Nokia G21 performed well during our testing, although perhaps slightly slower than expected for a smartphone with an average battery capacity of 54050 mAh.

In our testing, the Nokia G21 achieved the following test results:

Battery Performance Score – 40 out of 100

The overall Battery Performance Score is now a global score taking calculations from Battery Life, Power Efficiency and Charging Times.

With a score of 40 awarded, the Nokia G21 was placed in 82nd place within our database of all testing scores. Therefore, it is positioned towards the bottom of the overall rankings for battery performance. Full details of our testing results database can be viewed in the ViserMark Smartphone Ranking 2021/22 table.

The Average Battery Performance Score of an Entry Tier smartphone is 36.9, so the Nokia G21 indicates a better than average battery performance when tested in our labs.

There is a small gap dividing the Nokia G21, just below mid-table with a score of 40 and the Realme 7i positioned in first place with a 62 score when looking closer at the Entry Tier table. Learn more about the testing results from Entry Tier smartphones, by following the link.

Battery Life - 2 Days of Use

BATTERY LIFE - Days of Use

Based on the ViserMark test protocol, the Nokia G21 achieved a score of 2 Days.

The Average Day of Use score of an Entry Tier smartphone is 2.2 Day of Use which places the Nokia G21 respectably alongside the Oppo and Motorola brands within this tier of smartphones. As shown on the chart below:

When viewing the official specification for the Nokia G21, the manufacturer does state that this smartphone has a 3 Day battery life. This testing is based on their own testing methodology.

Our testing environment ensures the following:

  • Based on real smartphone usage from 100% battery level down to Power Off

  • The protocol includes common daily life activities, for instance: Calls, Web, Video and Music streaming, Gaming, Social networks, Picture & Video capture, standby

  • Performed under strictly controlled test conditions

  • All activities are executed in a defined order and timeline

Overall, the Nokia G21 with a 5050 mAh battery, did achieve an impressive battery life performance. This reached a top-half ranking of #42 for overall Days of Usage in our database of testing results.

CHARGING TIME – 2 Hours and 56 Minutes

CHARGING TIME - Hours and Minutes

The charging time to 100% was 2 hours and 56 minutes to a full charge.

The Average Charging Time for an Entry Tier smartphone is 1 hour and 59 minutes.

The Nokia G21 took 2 hours and 59 minutes, so being 1 hour slower than the average charging time for this tier, was disappointing.

The charging time for the Nokia G21 just missing out by 1 second of that of the Nokia G10, however, it is still 11 seconds quicker than the Motorola G30, as the chart shows below.

It is also worth noting that the Nokia G21 does support 18W fast charging, however, it is boxed with a less powerful 10W adapter.

POWER EFFICIENCY – 1 Leaf from a 5 Leaf Rating

There are several power-efficient processors, within today's smartphones, that can cope with the growing number of new applications and can support

high-resolution displays without compromising battery life.

Power Efficiency is calculated using Battery Life and Battery Capacity. This is expressed in “Leaves", reflecting a rating between 1 being the least and 5 being the most power-efficient.

The Average Power Efficiency for an Entry Tier smartphone has a rating of 1.8 Leaf.

A Power Efficiency Score of 1.0 was given to the Nokia G21, therefore falling short of this battery performance level.

From the table shown below, we have the Power Efficiency results shown for the closest challengers of the Nokia G21 within the Entry Tier. You will notice that the Nokia G21 is able to compete well with the Oppo A16 and Ulefone Note 11P which also have a similar battery capacity of 5000 mAh.

Once again the Nokia G21 was unable to challenge the Nokia G10, with a power efficiency rating of 2.5 and over the average expected for Entry Tier smartphones.

See more smartphone Power Efficiency ratings from our testing database, follow this link.

Should I buy it?

As a budget smartphone, the Nokia G21 can offer good performance, but when compared with Realme and Motorola smartphones it does fall a little short. Even against the Nokia G10, it is lacking in battery life and power efficiency rating.

Despite being stylish in design and having a few satisfying features like FM radio and a MicroSD slot, it does not have an ultrawide camera, which is now an expected feature, even on budget smartphones. With that said the 90Hz refresh capability is noticeable and improves the user experience of this smartphone.
